Turf Tips

Mowing
  • Recommended Mowing Height for Central Indiana grasses is 2" to 3.5".
  • Mow frequently enough so you don't cut off more than 1/3 of the grass blade.
  • Avoid mowing in midday when temperatures are above 90 degrees and turf is dry.
  • Mulch the clippings, it is important to recycle valuable water and nutrients back into the turf.
  • Sharpen your mower blades 4 to 6 times per year.

Watering

  • Ideal time to water is between 4am and 8am and the second best time is between 8am and 12pm.
  • Most lawns need 1 to 1 1/2 inches of water per week depending on weather, slope and soil conditions.
  • Apply irrigation in 1 or 2 soakings per week, 3 to 4 days apart rather than light frequent irrigations.

Aeration

  • Aeration is important because it relieves soil compaction, improves water and air movement into the soil.
  • Aeration can also reduce thatch.
  • Aeration is most beneficial when 20-40 holes per square foot and penetration is 2 to 3 inches deep. It may require multiple passes to acheive 20 to 40 holes per square foot.
  • Recommended in the Fall or Spring while turf is actively growing.

Seeding

  • Fall is the best time to seed your lawn.
  • Seeding in the spring is very difficult, but sometimes it is warranted due to winter turf damage or thin lawns due to insect and/or disease damage from the previous year.
